The origins of the OC Pickleheads Club (and its predecessor Bonita Canyon Pickleheads Club) began with a handful of folks brought together via MeetUp playing at Bonita Canyon Sports Park in September 2021. The MeetUps were hosted by George, a recent arrival to Newport Beach. He didn't know any players, so he thought this was a way to get to know local players and bring them together, sharing his enthusiasm for pickleball.
Frustrated with lengthy wait times at the Bonita Canyon courts and the inability to reserve its courts, George decided to organize the first pickleball social event at Tustin Legacy Veterans Sports Club on October 27, 2021, with Beth, Bryan, Doyle, Gemma, Lori, Mitchell, and Vanessa competing on 2 courts. Soon with the Bonita Canyon Pickleheads Club Executive Council Lori, Gemma, and The Squad, more events were hosted at Tustin Legacy and Eight80 from 2021 to 2024. Since its humble beginnings, the club has flourished by hosting over 30 sold-out themed events as of September 2024 and currently has 316 people on its mailing list. With its growth and popularity, it was time for the Bonita Canyon Pickleheads Club, then just a community social group, to obtain official status in the public eye. Therefore, on October 4, 2023, the OC Pickleheads Club (reflecting its broader geographic reach) was incorporated as a tax-exempt non-profit organization under IRS 501(c)(3) status.
The OC Pickleheads Club is dedicated to providing a joyful and healthy recreational activity for its members through the sport of pickleball. Our focus is on fostering social interaction, honing skills, and creating a supportive community within the broader pickleball network. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment that welcomes players of all ages and backgrounds and advocates for the improvement and growth of pickleball facilities in our community.

"Since picking up a borrowed paddle in 2017, I quickly became an avid enthusiast. It was not just the competitive game that drew me in, but also the sense of welcoming and belonging within the pickleball community. With over 40 years of C-level administrative experience in the non-profit sector, I was instrumental in birthing a pickleball club in central California. When I moved to Orange County in 2021, I took joy in organizing pickleball social events with the aim of providing an inclusive space. It has been a true honor and privilege to unite a group of players from all ages and walks of life. I am proud to have been one of the founding board members of the OC Pickleheads Club."

Fast forward 3 years and I’m playing almost every day, still struggling to remember the score after each point. My home base has been Bonita Canyon Pickleball Courts, with the occasional visit to the new courts at Newport Coast. Pickleball has proven to be social phenomenon as I have played with people of all ages, from all over the world, representing many different cultures and beliefs. It’s like the UN with bright green balls flying around. I encourage everyone to give Pickleball a try! Now, who’s serve is it and what’s the score?"

Our weekly games at Veterans Sports Park brought us together, and even though most of us have moved to Los Cab, my passion for the sport remains unwavering. I appreciate the exercise and outdoor activity, but most of all, I cherish the kindness and warmth of fellow pickleball players. I am excited to be on the Board and help create even more fun pickleball memories!

"My Pickleball journey started in August 2022 when I bought two paddles for $40 on Amazon and signed up for a beginner's class with my wife in Irvine. It wasn't long before I collected a dozen or so phone numbers and started meeting up with people to play with. After I felt I was no longer a "beginner" I started going to Bonita Canyon to pick up games and quickly realized that there was a pickleball culture that wasn't like anything I've ever experienced in competitive sports. No matter where I walked onto a court (Ohio, Florida, Wisconsin, New York), the Pickleball culture was the same. I completely fell in love with the game because of this culture and all the great people I've met along the way. I recently had the opportunity to teach beginner and intermediate pickleball at the UCI Anteater Recreation Center and earlier this year I became a Certified Coach through Professional Pickleball Registry (PPR). My journey has just begun, and I still have so much more to learn, but I'm enjoying every game and every person I have the pleasure of playing with. See you on the courts!"
